Capsule Summary
The Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 is a patchwork created by threading together performances by several different pianists. The opening 53 seconds of the first movement are played by Dimitris Sgouros. Bernd Glemser then plays until 4:06. At that point, Martha Argerich’s recording with Claudio Abbado is used for a short 17-second orchestral transition. Glemser then returns until 18:20, after which Evgeny Kissin concludes the movement.
The second movement begins with Bernd Glemser for 47 seconds. Evgeny Kissin then plays until 4:08. Glemser returns until 6:08, after which Kissin returns until 6:45. Martha Argerich then finishes off the movement.
The third movement begins with Bernd Glemser until 4:37. Martha Argerich’s recording is then used for an orchestral passage that lasts until 5:21. Glemser then takes over until 5:39, after which Joseph Banowetz concludes the work.
The Prokofiev Toccata, Op. 11 is taken from Roland Pöntinen’s BIS recording and is sped up by approximately 7.5%. Balakirev’s Islamey is taken from Michele Campanella’s Nuova Era recording and is sped up by about 2.7%. This same Islamey also appears on Hatto’s An Anthology of Recital Encores, Volume 2.
The opening 43 seconds of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 are by Jon Kimura Parker, at which point it switches to an unidentified pianist. Until more is identified, this work will be treated as unidentified.
Thanks to Rick Mabry for identifying the Prokofiev Toccata.
